Recommended to us by her builder, this client sought out Rineer Designs for the transformation of her 1917 childhood home. Seeking modern updates while maintaining its original charm and character, she hired us to renovate a dated kitchen, design a new bathroom, add a mudroom, and an enclosed porch area. With family coming from other states, she sought a colorful, uplifting space where they could make new memories.
Our mission was to enhance this memory-laden childhood home by expanding its footprint with an addition and remodel. The goal was to preserve the character of the home, as well as the beloved radiator (where they’d huddle for warmth on chilly days). We also wanted to bring in our client’s favorite color, blue, and unique personality while expanding storage, increasing the footprint, and updating with modern conveniences for functionality and cohesive flow.
Inspired by our client’s love for bold color and transitional style, we designed an expansive space for cooking and preparing food that fosters connection in a lively gathering space. We added a new spa-like primary bath upstairs and reimagined the rear porch by enclosing it and integrating the charming brickwork to enhance its beauty. With a balance of light and dark finishes, the home makes a dramatic and bold statement, while preserving its sentimentality.
“I recently bought my parents’ 1917 home (my childhood home) after my Mother’s death, and then set about trying to bring the house into the 21st century while at the same time maintaining its early 20th-century character and charm. Heather from Rineer Designs was in charge of redesigning the seriously dated kitchen as well as designing a new bathroom and mudroom to be located in a newly enclosed back porch area.
Heather did an outstanding job! I had some general ideas, as well as a few specific thoughts for the kitchen. But quite frankly, Heather saved me from myself and a couple of my wrongheaded ideas on more than one occasion. Her instincts about what will work and what won’t work are excellent.
When I didn’t have any specific ideas about the new bathroom other than I wanted it to look “masculine,” she was able to figure out what I would like based on my specific ideas for the kitchen. She nailed it! The design of the new bathroom flows seamlessly into the rest of the house. It’s laid out in a way that I never envisioned but is very functional yet private.
I was not at all surprised that Rineer Designs recently won first place at the NKBD design awards ceremony for the best Before & After project for the remodel of my home.
